One court. Pickleball, basketball, and whatever else the family plays.
Most families do not have room for two courts and do not need them. A 30 by 60 pad holds a full pickleball court and a basketball half court at the same time, and the trick is in the lines. NorCal Surfaces lays out multi-sport game courts across Northern California so the sport you play most is the one the court looks like.
How the lines work
You pick the lead sport. It gets full-strength white lines. The second sport is painted as ghost lines, a few shades off the court color, visible when you are looking for them and quiet when you are not. If the family is split, both sets go on at full strength in two colors.
What fits on one pad
- Pickleball and basketball half court, the most common combination
- Pickleball and volleyball, with sleeves for both net heights
- Basketball and four-square or hopscotch for younger kids
- Tennis and pickleball, on a tennis-size pad
- Futsal or roller hockey lines on a larger pad
Equipment that gets out of the way
Net posts drop into sleeves so the net comes out for basketball. Hoops are adjustable and sit on the baseline, outside the pickleball court. Rebounders and fencing get planned in so a ball does not end up in the neighbor’s yard every game.
Questions we get
Slightly. The pad is the same. The extra is the second set of lines and the second sport’s equipment, usually a small fraction of the total.
Not in practice. The lead sport’s lines are bright white, and the ghost lines are close to the court color. Players stop noticing them within a game.
