NorCal Surfaces builds backyard and community pickleball courts across Northern California: the pad, the acrylic surface, the lines, the net, and the basketball hoop if you want one court to do both jobs. We are based in Butte County, not the Bay Area, so the estimate, the build, and the follow-up come from the same people, without a travel surcharge.
What a pickleball court build includes
A regulation pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet inside the lines. The pad around it is where you actually play, so we recommend 30 by 60 feet when the lot allows it and can work down to 24 by 54 on a tight yard.
- Layout and grading, with drainage planned before anything is poured
- A new concrete pad, or prep of the slab you already have
- Acrylic color coating in your choice of in-bounds, out-of-bounds, and kitchen colors
- Regulation lines, plus ghost lines for a second sport if you want them
- Net posts in sleeves so the net comes out, and a permanent or portable net
- Optional hoop, fencing, rebounder, and lighting, planned into the pad from the start
Pickleball plus basketball on one pad
The most common backyard build right now is a pickleball court that is also a basketball half court. You pick the lead sport. It gets full-strength white lines, and the other sport is painted a few shades off the court color so it is there when you want it and quiet when you do not. Try it in the planner below.
Noise, neighbors, and HOAs
Pickleball is louder than tennis, and a backyard court a few feet from a fence line will get noticed. We site the court with that in mind, and we can plan for a sound-dampening fence or a hedge line where a neighbor is close. If you are in an HOA, read your CC&Rs before you fall in love with a layout. Most allow a court with setbacks and hours; a few require an architectural review. Already have a court?
A faded or cracked pickleball court gets pressure washed, crack filled, recoated with acrylic color, and re-lined. A tennis court can be converted to two or four pickleball courts, or striped for both. That is days of work and a fraction of a new build.

The lines are 20 by 44 feet, but you need room to run down lobs and to serve. Plan on 30 by 60 feet if you can. We have built on 24 by 54, and the game is still good, you just play closer to the fence.
A new concrete pad almost always needs a permit from your city or county. Resurfacing or lining an existing slab usually does not. We handle the drawings and the application as part of the job.
A new court is typically two to four weeks from the first day on site, most of which is the concrete curing before it can be coated. Resurfacing an existing court is a few days.
